Laws play a very important role in creating an environment which minimises alcohol-related harm. In relation to young people, evidence shows that the following laws will have the most positive impact on alcohol use:
- Increasing the retail price of alcohol and restricting its promotion
- Restricting/banning alcohol advertising and sponsorship
- Reducing the availability and accessibility of alcohol in communities
- Raising the minimum purchase age for alcohol to 20 years
