Alcohol and Cancer

Alcohol is causing too much harm – to the people we care about and to our communities.

No matter who we are or where we live, many of us agree that alcohol is causing too much harm to people we care about and our society.

Did you know that one of the harms alcohol can cause is cancer? Even small amounts of alcohol over time increase our risk of getting cancer, as alcohol can damage our DNA.

Despite this, alcohol is everywhere – in our neighbourhoods, at our local sports clubs, near our children's school, constantly advertised. This makes it hard for any of us to avoid its harms.

To ensure the people we love can live healthy lives, free from the fear of diseases like cancer and dementia, and all the other alcohol-related harms, we need to set higher standards for how alcohol is sold and advertised.

Most of us agree. For example, 76% of New Zealanders supported neighbourhood limits on the places that can sell alcohol in a recent survey.

Let’s raise the standard. Let’s help protect our whānau from the harm alcohol causes.

What can you do?

Everyone deserves to know the truth about the products that are sold to us so we can be free to make our own decisions. Do your friends and family know that even small amounts of alcohol over time increase our risk of getting cancer, as alcohol can damage our DNA?

  • Have your say

ActionPoint has lots of great ways you can get involved to help protect the people we love from the harm alcohol causes.
